My friend Rafe told me last night that I shouldn’t read books more than once and should give them all away.
We’re both into form and function, and uncluttered looks.
Then he told me that I should buy a plasma TV. Almost every male I know has told me that. I think that they’re overpriced and overrated.
I will never listen to him about not reading books more than once. Think that reading books over and over again, if I want to is one of life’s great pleasures.
Remember the days when celebrities would be asked when they first knew they were making it. “When I could afford a hard covered book.” Didn’t believe most of them, but it sounded good.
Nobody has ever said (to my knowledge) “I knew that I was making it when I bought a 52 inch Plasma TV.” They might think, it but…
I sometimes call my apartment The Sharper Image warehouse because I have so many gadgets. But I have absolutely no interest in plasma TVs–even if I could afford it–which I can’t.
I don’t know any woman who wants a plasma TV.
Am I missing something?
When did TV become more important than books?
Is it a male/female thing?
Or is it just a Rafe/Pia thing?
We never fight but we argue over every little thing.

overpriced and overrated is correct. like I’m going to spend $1000+ to watch commercials. I think not. just wanted to vote here to tell you not all guys (not even all nerds) think you “need” a new tv.
Pia-
I keep some of my favorite books and reread them over the years. One of my favorite tales is Ken Follet’s “Pillars of the Earth”
As for the plasma thing, I’m probably in the minority, but I’ve no real interest in getting one. I don’t watch much TV though.
BTW- I tried to e-mail you regarding the guestbook message you sent, but your mailbox is full. but I’d be happy to have you bounce some ideas off of me anytime. Just e-mail me at the address provided in the comment box.
Perhaps its a intellectual vs. bonehead sort of thing?
I don’t know any woman who wants a plasma teeVee either. And yes, reading books more than once is nothing to sneer at – though recently I read Jane Austen’s NORTHANGER ABBEY for a comparitive lit class, which delves into this very subject (no not the desire for a plasma teeVee) – namely the difference between women’s relationship to the written word vs. men’s. My apartment is FILLED with books – antique publications, modern, multiple publications of Shakespeare’s plays – whole sections in the large bookcases devoted to different areas of interest in our house (Manpants likes to read as well, and the same book more than once – so maybe he’s accessing his feminine side) – so we’ve got theatre, English and American lit, anything on the space program, civil war, noir fiction, etc… books rule – a plasma teeVee just requires another big piece of furniture to hide it in when it’s not being used (cause it fits with no known decorating scheme other than black leather and chrome).
How many books could one buy for the cost of a plasma tv?
I would go for the books every time. Then I would re-read a couple of them.
Yes I see that it’s a link. Not home; didn’t bring my log in info; will fix it later!
