As Destiny doesn’t come calling

decisive, brands, pen, bands–three word Wednesday–fiction

I am going away Tuesday morning at 3:30 AM and need to get it together. I might not have the second half of this until I come back though I will really really try .

Time: Three days after Princess Diana’s wedding to what’s his name.
Place: Upper West Side
Marly Looked at her walls that were still decorated with ghastly wedding decorations because her friend Victoria had borrowed her perfect for a party apartment, called every single person in her phone book and invited them all to a wedding party.

Marly owned several Betamaxs so the entire wedding could be replayed in different areas of the apartment. That was only one of the many reasons Victoria wanted to use her apartment.

Victoria had neglected to tall her that she had received 92 acceptances until the day of the party when Marly had to ask The Silver Palate to triple the take out order. The Silver Palate made all their own foods. Their salad dressings and other foods were sold along other brands in supermarkets.

Some of their mutual boy friends brought more food and added to the Dom Perignon stash. There was plenty of smoke and the boys brought the coke. Their friend Dinah was into making organic cakes with fruit instead of sugar. She had made a carrot wedding cake with yogurt frosting. It actually was excellent. Though she might have liked it so much because of all the Colombian Red she had smoked.

Marly’s apartment was a classic six : two bedrooms, maids room, living room, dining room, eat in kitchen, two full baths, two half baths and one WC , (toilet in a tiny room off the kitchen) all off a long wide foyer that was filled with her black and white photos. Marly had taken the walls down between the kitchen, dining and living rooms to make one large loft type room.

Marly had the apartment cleaned but insisted that Victoria take down the decorations. Secretly she liked them despite the tack. She figured everybody had a Victoria in their lives. Somebody who lived in 200 very filthy square feet though she could afford much better, showed up at meal times, and invited 92 of her closest friends to a party Marly would pay for. Including a woman who couldn’t have been mucher older than them and had absolutely no teeth or dentures. Marly was scared that she would stare at her all night. She had managed to avoid the woman after one ghastly second of accidentally watching her eat.

Victoria was clever. She had won Jeopardy for four straight days. That was always the best thing Marly could think to say about her. Her friends played “The Victoria Game.” If you could think of a good quality, you won two points, a bad quality you lost one point. Winning was damn hard. It might have been cruel but it was fun, and Victoria had “borrowed” rent money often from all of them. Nobody knew how Victoria spent her money. It wasn’t on rent, food, clothes, drugs or drink. Victoria looked like some sort of city farm girl hippie

The doorbell rang though the doorman hadn’t called. She assumed that it was Victoria and opened the door to two overweight balding men who flashed what she would learn were detective’s shields at her.

“Can we come in?”
“Why?”
We have to talk to you about the Allied robbery”
“You’re kidding? This is a joke right?”
The thinner fat detective smiled. This wasn’t like anything she had seen on TV, in the movies or read. The detectives were so ordinary looking. She had never thought about it before but realized that she thought all detectives were like the ones in the media.
“Andrea Lois is a friend of yours?”
“I haven’t seen her much since she moved to San Francisco, and not at all in the past eighteen months. Yes, she’s a friend.”

Was this the part where she said she needed to call her lawyer? Or did she let them in because if they were insinuating that Andrea was an armed robber who killed people, they were wrong? Or do you never really know your best friends?

Marly’s fiancee, Jesse, insisted that you never knew a person until you lived with them. They had been living together for four years and Marly still wasn’t sure that she knew Jesse, a news cameraman who traveled often. He was still in England photographing the Royal world. Damn she should have gone with him, as everybody from Jesse to her parents to his parents to their friends, except for Victoria, wanted. She just wasn’t into all the pomp and marching bands.

Okay, be decisive, Marly, tell the police to go away and comeback with a warrant.

She let them in, and watched them take the apartment in. The policemen surprised her when they walked down the foyer. They stopped and looked at the photographs. The fatter one said that he had been to a show of her work, and had bought a few prints. The thinner fat one excitedly pointed them out.

Now Marly was completely confused. Detectives who knew her work were at her apartment to question her about Andrea? Shouldn’t they act as if they hated her or thought she was guilty of being friends with a former fugitive?

She had heard about Andrea’s arrest. It was big news. This morning she had met Dinah in a coffee shop. They had been afraid to talk so had scribbled notes on napkins using a pen Dinah had brought.

To be continued: But first an advert for me and some thoughts
This is an example of the type of story my novel has. But this was written very fast, is raw, and the words had to be fit in. It has so much detail because it is part of a longer story and the decorations play a part.
This is my 1487 post though I’m not sure how many stayed in draft and/or were used for other blogs and other things. I might do something special for my 1500, but have no idea what. I won’t be posting while I’m in Cancun–leave here 3:30 AM next Tuesday. I carry the concept of free first class to the max. So far the weather shows showers every day I’m there/

Dave has been drawing me into his journey with diabetes. He’s been telling his stor with dispassion and courage.

Because he’s self employed he had no insurance. When you’re self employed that can be an easy thing not to have in this country. I only do because the ghost of my father would haunt me if I didn’t have it.

Cooper did an amazing post on a conversation with her grandmother. She thinks that it’s banal. I think that it shows the differences between three generations. I do love her cause posts and understand her reluctance to go into her personal life, but sometimes…..

Jason has been going out to the edge and succeeding greatly. He’s not scared to say anything. I’m proud and he tells great stories.

Still Bone supplies the words for three word Wednesday. I have long thought him a good writer with much potential. Lately every post he does is consistently excellent, and fun to read. If he changed that screen name, h would probably be published by now.

I was going to leave the Wombat a comment but bad Blogger misbehaved. See his haircut. Okay it’s adorable, takes some getting used to, and he’s holding his ponytail as if he’s an old rocker about to eat a snake or chicken head.

The Wombat and I share a love for Boston Legal. It was the first time that I could listen to “Walking to New Orleans without breaking into tears or see pictures without crying. They showed pictures while playing the song, so this was a major breakthrough. Though I think people who didn’t cry over Katrina in some way are sick. Even Denny yes William Shatner seemed to be affected and maybe will love his beloved president a bit less.

Briefly Alan Shore went to New Orleans and gave the most amazing summation in the history of…a doctor had killed old patients in a hospital because she didn’t want them to die painful deaths.

Alan argued that New Orleans hadn’t been part of the United States of America that week and therefore the laws weren’t applicable.

I have to wonder if any of us live in the USA anymore when we live in a country where the president….

The foundation for the new World Trade Center is beginning to be constructed today.

The families are still bickering over placement of names in the memorial. That is no longer newsworthy, and doesn’t deserve space in a newspaper.

    Fabulous!

OK, you’ve now officially done 3WW on every day of the week, I believe :)

    “The thinner fat one…”

    Great Pia line.

City farm girl hippie? That pretty much covers it all :)

Hey, you can’t just leave me hanging mid story!!!!!!
Please write on (well at least about what the policemen actually want to talk about (that’s if they even are policemen))
I will be checking daily! :-)
    Kind regards,
    Jeannine

  4. 4

Yes, I agree, please finish the story. It’s great so far.

  5. 5

    Nicely done as always.

It reminded me of this, from Studio 60. It comes out during the week leading up to the show that band members from tv shows all over are calling in sick even though they’re not, and suggesting replacements from New Orleans so that they can get some cash in their pockets, some exposure, and union cards to make Christmas easier on them. When the producer finds out, he arranges this interlude, sadly interrupted by a bit of plot that wasn’t nearly as distracting when watching the full episode.

Alan Shore did sum it up perfectly; especially the double meaning behind, “the United States of America wasn’t here,” which I took also to be a subtle reference to the government’s lack of action. Enough to reference it without bringing politics into a closing that didn’t warrant it.

But Denny got to the center of the matter. It was off the radar.

Heh. Old rocker about to devour a snake? Didn’t think that for a second but it makes sense.

  6. 6

I sort of didn’t give an antecedent for that first “it” but I think you know that I mean BL by it

  7. TonyG Says:
    7

Yes, that’s what I wondered, too. Are they really detectives? Of course, the only detectives I remember seeing are Joe Friday, Magnum P.I. and the guys on Hawaii Five-0.

  8. 8

Pia, what can I say? Your stories are wonderful.

  9. 9

Pauline, Jeanine thank you much, and please please come back

Bone, I actually struggled with the city farm girl line, thanks :)

    Mojo, I will

Pauline, Tony G all I can say is that you will find out

EW, I thought that his reference to the US not taking action was explicit in his statement, and yes, Denny , (Shatner) was beyond amazing.

Denny’s not going to change. Wouldn’t want to and Mad Cow but his politics probably will.

And I left out the whole Denise/sex with friends subplot and the rivalry she and Shirley (Candice Bergen) are going to have

Elvira, thank you. Feel like I finally found my genre :)

  10. 10

I think that Paul Lewiston’s reaction to the concept of friends with benefits was at least as interesting as a rivalry between Denise and Shirley. Every now and again that guy reminds me why I like having him around. And did you see the preview for the next episode? I can’t wait to see what happens once Alan’s nose is in the matter.

    Happy New Year!

This is great stuff–I’ll be back for the sequel:)
It’s amazing how the Princess Di wedding nails a time period perfectly in our minds.

    13

I like the Vicxtoria’s game. That’s pure evil and you’re wrong for thinking it up. But in a good way.

  14. 14

    Thanks Actonbell–was trying for that

Doug–takes evil to know evil, but in a good way

EW, I thought the same thing–about Paul

we should probably begin a Boston Legal blog

I will take Spader’s nose in anything and everything

    Wally–happy New Year

you got me thinking about two brothers that were in my scout troop, who became well known bank robbers in the city I lived at, but they got caught on their three robbery, after leading police on a chase throughout town. It was odd to see their pictures (they were in their early 20s then) on the front page of the paper.

Again, I love these three word days, no matter which day of the week I manage to read them. The stories which go along with them must be writtn in a book.
