A New York anecdote:
I was getting out of a cab near Madison in the 60’s, why I was in a cab on a beautiful day will be discussed later; two young and very healthy looking men began to get in. “59th and Lexington,” they said to the cab driver.
“No,” I found myself screaming. “It’s quicker if you walk.” Madison is two measly avenues away. It’s at most a five minute walk and…nobody should be in a cab on a day like today, unless they really really have to be.

All week I have been feeling out of it, and couldn’t figure out why. It’s been damn beautiful and people have been coming out of hibernation. I keep telling people to call me, half hour before they come over. My apartment’s a child free, always presentable place so evenings begin and end here. Too often we don’t leave, but this week’s been one gorgeous gift.
Tuesday I was kidnapped and forced to go to The Boat Basin, or the clubhouse as we call it, as it’s in Riverside Park, and we spend way too much time there. It’s where I will be most of the weekend. Or not. It’s a good weekend to explore as so many people are away.
I was so damn tired. Rafe came back with me, some other friends called, and I ended up having a houseful of men until one AM. Rafe and I were nodding out. But he deserved to as he had eaten a steak sandwich. I had a tuna spring roll and half a chopped salad. Lucia had the other half. She’s a mommy and gets up at five AM so she had to go home after dinner.
Watching the sunset over the river is worth everything. Wish my apartment did. I can see the reflection from windows on West End. That’s kind of cool in its own way.
Yesterday I was useless. I wrote a story about a 50+ waitress in a divey coffee shop because I felt as if I had been on a two day bender. Only I drank fresh lemonade, and much much Metromint water. Other people like to smash mint into water; I apparently like to pay. But it is much better. Much much more minty and refreshing.
I went to sleep at 8 PM. Yes i did, and I had taken two naps. I woke up at six AM all chipper and into the beauty of the day, but I became more and more tired.
I began to worry that I had contacted some fatal disease that I was going to ignore until the last week in June because I’m going to Myrtle Beach. Couldn’t even get myself to call the car service. That’s something I love to do. I’m a lucky New Yorker. I have a storage room in my building’s basement for only $45 a month. To some people that’s like winning the lottery. I couldn’t even get myself to go to the storage room to get my suitcases that I need. They also have my summer clothes, something desperately needed. Fortunately I keep some up here.
I need new tee shirts and other stuff, and could only get it together to buy shoes. They’re easy. My hair appointment was pushed back a few days, first by me, then by Rafe. I had to go today. It was that or not be seen in public until Tuesday. My hair is a weed. My nails grow faster than bugs have been trying to get into my apartment I’m supposed to feel good about that and I do, but the upkeep is tremendous.
On Tuesday I had a dentist appointment that should have put me over the moon as for the first time in my known life I don’t have any problems. Actually the bone has totally healed from the seven surgeries, and is perfect. A word not usually applied to my mouth, in any aspect.
Today I looked at my face before going to the hair salon and freaked. It was all swollen. I am vain. i have good bones, but you would never know it from looking at me today. And I couldn’t find the good prescription Fendi sunglasses that cover more. I have the biggest head in the country and the smallest features. That makes me sound pinched. I’m not.
I was too tired to walk so I took the cab where I met the guys….The salon is all mirrors. Wasn’t fun looking at myself.
Two and a half cups of coffee later I was feeling great and my face wasn’t swollen anymore.
I had bought coffee at Fairway that said “decaf” in the smallest smallest font possible. Ususally I can tell immediately because I get a horrible head ache but I didn’t have that this time. Had some yesterday but yesterday I did wake up to think there should have been empty bottles all over the place. There were empty coffee cups.
If I held out a few days longer I would have been over my caffeine withdrawal but I love a caffeine high. Actually forgot that there is one.
This is the first year in many years I haven’t had allergies. I thought that if I weren’t dying I was having a new virulent form of them. One with no symptoms but overwhelming exhaustion.
Oh coffee, I love you so much. And you’re affordable in New York. One of the very few affordable things.
And coffee’s still legal.

i kept refusing coffee other places because I was drinking tons at home. Just before I left for the salon I finally saw the word “decaf”
I was going to give up both writing and blogging. but that has changed.

This is fleet week and the sailors aren’t the only hot things around. Lucia saw an apartment building next to the Coach factory burn down. The people all got out. She called and I got to hear about the water tower on top of the building collapse
Coach took out as many bags as it could and Lucia didn’t try to abscond with any.

It all sounds lovely pia.
The being vain about the swollen mouth is so you.
Pia, you’re so Jackie O. A scarf and a good pair of sunglasses can cover a wealth of sins
I’ll be there in a few months. Warm up a couch for me umkay?
I imagine the insurance company will be raising everyones premiums!
Not even one little Coach bag?
I do love a good caffeine high and as you’ve pointed out, it’s still legal. This was a fun light post - vanities and all.
I need tee shirts, too. Sigh. All these menial tasks are keeping me from achieving my full potential. Yes, that’s it. Maybe I should get a personal assistant.
New York is always full of surprises
