As Destiny doesn’t come calling

America’s Bastard Children–by my nephew of choice, Kenny Butler

I think we are a country worth saving. But first we have to acknowledge that an entire race has been unfairly treated. This post isn’t by me. I put it in as it says so much

I don’t agree with every word. I do agree with most. I understand what it means to be “different.” I can’t imagine what it feels like to be a Black-American.

I have known Kenny’s family forever. His mother C is my “landlord” here. His aunt who I call Lucia has been my closest friend forever.

This is an article by Roger Cohen–Beyond America’s Original Sin that explains why still another White person understands where Wright and Obama are coming from.

A couple of days ago I found Pastor Wright’s explanation. I think it worth reading.

But first Kenny, who is part of a multi-color, brilliant family I feel so honored to be part of

Why is it that the “blacks” are expected to “transcend” race and racism?
Since when is the onus on the victim to transcend their victimization? Is
the abused expected to transcend abuse? The rape victim expected to
transcend the horror of rape? By this line of reasoning, we can reduce the
budget by dismissing all of the employees working for the criminal justice
system and require the victims of future crimes to simply “transcend” crime.
We can fix healthcare by transcending disease and illness.

Listen, like it or not, The African was kidnapped, enslaved, forced to watch
their parents, children and siblings sold away to distant plantations,
raped, lynched, subjected to inferior schools, Jim Crow laws and racial
profiling yet the expectation is on them to transcend racism?

Why is it that black Americans are forced to suffer quietly and not offend
their victimizer by voicing their anguish over the continued victimization?
Why is Barack wrong for not hating the victim and allowing the victim their
day in the sun? Isn’t the beauty of America that you can verbalize your pain
to your elected representative without jeopardizing their ability to serve
their community.

A lot has been made over Dr. Wright’s comments. He has been labeled a hate
monger and a racist. Since when is it wrong or racist to voice your anger over the treatment a black man certainly experienced during the Jim Crow era of American History? Why is a black preacher’s verbal attack on America racist in the first place? Unless white people truly believe that America is THEM and they alone are America.

Dr. Wright has been labeled and dismissed as a cook because of another
accusation. One that accuses the US Gov’t of creating AIDS and putting it
into the black community. If you are one who agrees that this point is
absurd, I have 2 words for you, “Tuskegee Experiment”. For forty years
between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an
experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for
the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in
Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its
seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,” their
doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all. The data for the
experiment was to be collected from autopsies of the men, and they were thus
deliberately left to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis-which
can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and
death. “As I see it,” one of the doctors involved explained, “we have no
further interest in these patients until they die.” In 1997, President Bill
Clinton had this to say “The United States government did something that was
wrong-deeply, profoundly, morally wrong. It was an outrage to our commitment
to integrity and equality for all our citizens. . . . clearly racist.”

Do we really not understand where the passion and pain with which an Al
Sharpton or a Louis Farrakhan speaks is born? Do we really not understand
why their perspective infused with the same passion that was exhibited by
Dr. Wright resonates with so many Black Americans? Might this also be the
reason that our “conservative” countrymen and women are so discomforted by
these truths being expressed? Are we to dismiss the truths of their
statements and sermons simply because it causes discomfort in the hearts of
the weak and wicked? Those who coincidentally, happen to have a lock on the
opinion shaping instruments of our time.

The blacks are America’s Bastard Children that, to her great chagrin,
cannot be gotten rid of; and the media’s stance on this painful issue makes
the point. For “conservatives” and “blue collar whites” this is
entertainment. It is an exercise in avoiding the real issue and impact of
America’s ugly past on her Black citizens, veterans, teachers, firefighters
and police officers; for blacks this is a promise that the caseeds that
spawned the hell that the American experience has been for their forefathers
is still alive in the children of their original oppressors.

For all of the problems that America faces, it is ultimately an unwise
decision to continue her practice of proactive disenfranchisement against
such a vital and significant percentage of her population.

Yes! We can.

i have to add that the first time I heard somebody speak about 9/11 as “payback” it wasn’t an “angry Black pastor,” but an adorable almost stereotypical suburban housewife–my mother. My sister and I learned from our parents that a society is only as great as the worst treated member.

Gail Collins speaks for me; and a side on Obama/Wright

I can’t think anymore. It has nothing to do with Southern heat as it’s not hot, and everything to do with fear. There were reasons I wanted my apartment on the market, earlier, very valid reasons. I wasn’t sure what was going to go wrong with the economy next but I had faith that it would tank.

The president–what does he care? Read Gail Collins. It would be nice if the Democratic candidates talked about it. But they’re so busy fighting each other, I haven’t heard either candidate or McCain talk about what happened Friday and what happened was big. On the other hand if I believed the comments in the real estate blogs I read, I would take my apartment off the market. I realized before I left New York how much I would miss it, but I like living like a grownup. I’m such a hyper anxious person I can no longer take the ever growing frenzied lifestyle. It feeds my anxiety.
Has either candidate been addressing Iraq? What’s that?
I found this letter from Pastor Wright to The New York Times.

I feel that the media has played a giant part in this economic crisis. They have fed the frenzy. People are taking money out of the stock market based on what? Stocks that have nothing to do with the subprime mess or Bear Stearns are plunging. Bear Stearns did have a lot to do with subprime loans.

I would like to believe that Obama doesn’t support Farrakhan
. I would like to believe that he truly believes Jews played an important role in the civil rights movement and many of us continue to try to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves or have a lesser voice. Black’s have a voice now. Let Obama and Clinton talk about real issues. This country is hurting in ways we haven’t during most of our lifetimes.

I have thought a lot about why I’m never afraid to tackle issues yet only talk about being Jewish in the comical “I’m a New York Jew like Seinfeld sense. I think it’s because I fear the wrath of just about everybody. I think because many Americans do think of Jews as money-grubbing figures and/or comical ones.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise and I can no longer remain quiet. This isn’t to say that I agree with everything Israel does, and I really don’t want to talk about this because then I will have to talk about why Israel came about and many other things I truly have no desire to talk about.

I’m an American Jew and my loyalty is to America as are Obama’s. Jews, Blacks, and Muslims more than most groups should understand the question of “divided loyalties.” Nobody ever says to an Irish-American, “so you believe in Ireland over America?” Can we get over this and focus on the issues?.

Watching George W. Bush address the New York financial community Friday brought back many memories. Unfortunately, they were about his speech right after Hurricane Katrina, the one when he said: “America will be a stronger place for it.”
“You’ve helped make our country really in many ways the economic envy of the world,” he told the Economic Club of New York.

Read the rest of the article.
I’m selling the most adorable apartment in Manhattan. At this stage of my life adorable doesn’t cut it.

Not one politician has addressed what’s happened to New York since 9/11. But GWB’s the one who began the spiral.

All my single without children, girlfriends in the arts and “helping professions” left before I did. Nobody cares. There are rich people to take our place.

Collins doesn’t rant on that part. It’s a brilliant article on Bush’s non-responsiveness and really would anybody with half a brain give that speech yesterday?

The stock market has been tanking for months. Sadly the market is the heart and soul of New York. Yesterday felt like The Depression. It was another day filled with horror filled phone calls and emails. Everybody I know who works for Bear Stearns and I know a few–panicking. Everybody I know who has an account there is panicking. It’s a lot more than Bear Stearns.

Bush reacted as he did to 9/11, to Katrina–read the damn article. I’m too out of control and having to learn how to respond to tornado warnings to think about writing.

Read this article please. It’s brilliant.

Hard Wired Brains

We took down the post we wrote on Barack Obama as we don’t want to add fuel to…in any way. We hope that people have the sense to realize that pride in ones racial or ethnic background is a good thing as long as it isn’t used the way Hitler or white supremacists used it. We know that any group Obama is part of would use pride for the good.

That directly leads to how we cut our blogging teeth. We were innocent in the ways of blogging back in 04 and part of 05. We didn’t realize that the radical right wanted to rule the blogosphere and found ourselves in too many fights with them

When we were asked to defend our moral relativist stance we could only say that our parents teachings, our education, our experiences, and most of all something inside ourselves knew right from wrong. Now our favorite and most hated newspaper The New York Times has a cover magazine story on moral instincts. I said “favorite” and “most hated” as it is both, and this article would agree with me.

I have never seen life in black and white but many shades of gray. This article shows why. I say, jokingly some of the time, that I have a built in guilt meter–again just read this article.

Morality is much more complicated than biblical teachings. Our brains are hard wired, usually, to do the right thing. Now that much is being learned about how the brain operates we’re learning about how morality takes place in it, and our morality is fashioned by our brains, our experiences, the communities we’re part of.

The article is much more complicated than that and very worth reading. But yes I was right all along. Our inbred guilt meter–we’re half Russian Jewish/half Irish Catholic, and were raised in our family of choice, a wonderful, funny, smart and oh so anxious family. Our guilt stood no chance. We have been learning to feel less guilty and less anxious as we want to ive a long and healthy life. We know that anxiety played a role in both our parents deaths/ They covered in public so well, nobody but me really knew the extent of their anxiety. Our sister was too learn more about our mother in later years but we were the older daughter.

We knew the first question was a trick one as we have long not thought Mother Teresa to be the saint people thought she was. She healed people but did nothing to better their life conditions.

We here at Courting are unapologetic about the people we have angered. We do wish we had spent less time trying to be rational when we were dealing with irrational people and just said what we think.

For a whole other side of me read my new blog. If you want the url please ask. As this blog is very new and we haven’t been pimping it much, we’re amazed by the number of hits it’s been getting. It’s about a single subject and can be funny. It’s fun to write and is very cathartic. It’s not political or issued based. We might actually include a link to the URL in a few weeks.

It got an incredible comment from the matriarch of a royal blogging family. TLP or Tan Lucy Pez We’re not usually pithy or clever enough for her. It’s OK. We have dreamed of this day

Reason number nine for not voting for Hillary: She speaks out of both sides of her mouth. She claimed much experience as practically being a member of a cabinet during Bill’s presidency. Now she says the opposite.

We speak in the royal we in this post as today we feel like royalty. The things we intuitively thought about morality arre being given a true scientific basis.Sometimes we slip into the first person. What can we say? We’re human.

We probably won’t be leaving for South Carolina until 2/6 so we can vote on 2/5. We will be a legal resident of New York until the apartment sale closes and that might be sometime in 2010. We say sort of jokingly and hope we’re not jinxing ourselves.
