I have to thank or kill Bone for this. I never
attempted fiction before. I love it but have no training or expertise in it. I do read a lot. My favorite books are psychological suspense. I also have a thing for cutting edge sexual books, and films. I’m a bit scared to go as far as I can.
Colliding Worlds is set in New York in 2030. Nell, Justin, Denny, Denny’s twin Del and Rachel had grown up together and gone to the same college. Nell and Justin had been a couple forever, but Denny convinced Nell that Justin was seeing somebody else. They married in college. All had been recruited by The ISB, an international peace organization. Nell found out that Denny was secretly working for The USC, an organization that wanted to take over the newly peaceful world. Nell played along for a year then left Denny and married Justin
In 2028, fourteen months prior to this story, Denny kidnapped Nell. She was fed hallucegnics and meds, and would have brief periods where she remembered her former life. Denny convinced Nell that she was named Ella, had left Justin who supposedly died. Denny convinced Nadia a nurse for the ISC that Justin and Nell were traitors. He brought both Nell and Nadia to Colombia where Nell was constantly losing and sort of gaining her mind. Two months ago he brought them back to New York. Nadia was feeding Nell more drugs for her own agenda. Nell had regressed to an almost infant like state with periods of lucidity
*********************
The United States is now controlled by eleven major corporations. Actually the corporations are controlled by The ISB. Global warming is a thing of the past. Most American’s are content as diseases and poverty are being controlled. The average life span is 98. Workdays are short and work is fun. Most people don’t mind that The Fourth Amendment was done away with in the last days of The Bush admin. They don’t mind the security cameras that are everywhere or that Google controls the news. They have gladly sacrificed some freedoms to live great lives.
Denny minds. He wants The Constitution back. More than that he likes strife. He doesn’t realize that while The ISB is in control they are also working to get back freedoms. That in order to keep peace they have to pretend to agree with the CEO’s of the Big Eleven as the corporations are called, all other governments, that include new “Third World” countries. The ISB is about to take over everything, and bring true peace to the world. Denny has always been a tool and he is a tool of The USC which is trying to stop the ISB. The USC wants to take over things over in the name of worker’s revolutions. What happens when the workers are happy? Though their freedom is more limited, people feel free.
The USC wants to control peoples minds through the use of implants in brains and ears, hallucagens and other medications. Denny’s twin brother Del was thought to be lost. He was kidnapped by the USC and is a “blank slate regressive.” All Del’s memories were wiped out. He is told what to do, think and say by somebody who speaks into the chip. The affects of the chip might be able to be reversed but when they try the blank slate regressives turn into zombie like creatures.
Nell is a “manifold regressive. Her memories weren’t wiped out but superseded by the chip and drugs. The USC wants her to be totally confused. She has been told Justin was killed, and that she remarried Denny who was also killed and now lives with Del. The USC plans on implanting Justin. They want to see what will happen when two manifold regressives who loved each other are reunited.
The USC doesn’t get the chance to put that into operation.
They are all in one of the last townhouses in Tribeca. Denny’s people live in the bottom two floors. Denny doesn’t know that a third are really ISB agents. Justin has set the operation for Saturday but is scared he will lose Nell forever if he waits another three days. Justin is allowed total access as Denny believes him to be a dreamer who is low in The ISB.
Justin and Max, who Denny thinks is working for the USC are waiting for a new type stun gun. They know a bit about the chips but not enough. They know about the hallucinogenics but not enough. Though Rachel has seduced Nadia and Nadia’s in love with her, they don’t know if they can trust Nadia, who they recently found out is also a chemist under another identity. They know that Nadia has been feeding Nell other drugs to control her mind, but don’t know what the drugs are.
Justin manages to get the stun guns to stun the USC agents including Denny. They are shocked to find Del in a secret room.
They will be out for several hours. They take Nell, Denny, Del and Nadia on a helicopter to an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia that has a complete house in it
Now they are in the mine shaft which has an incredible house with faux windows that make it look as if they’re at the beach, in the mountains, wherever.
Justin tells Nadia that they know about her brother Yuri a brilliant chemist with Aspergers ranging on Autism. He is the only person aside from Nadia who knows the formula for the meds Nadia’s been feeding Nell. Yuri has a staph infection and can’t be moved to the former mining shaft. Nadia refuses to help until Yuri is there and even then…
Nell falls into a pool and loses consciousness. When she comes to, she assumes a third personality, Cornelia. Cornelia’s a party girl with no inhibitions.
Justin and Nadia are at a stalemate. Nadia claims that she only has half the formula and her brother has the other half. He has a severe contagious staph infection and can’t be moved. He will only speak to Nadia and will do whatever she says
Ona the head of the ISB Behavioral division is brought in. There is a filter that is preventing them from examining the pictures of Nell’s brain. Now that they can run many tests, they have to wait to see exactly how Nell’s brain is being affected. They have to analyze the chip in her brain.
Justin and Ona are scared that they are running out of time. They don’t know that Nell is fighting for her life also. A certain act brings Nell out. She’s afraid that she might not stay out or come back.
The dialogue with Cornelia is fun as it’s so imaginary. I have never had a brain chip implant, yes Bone that I’m aware of, nor have I ever been involved with a man who is the head of an international security force. The dialogue between Justin and Nell is difficult for me. It comes out sounding like a Lifetime movie, or cheesy movie or novel. I am working on that and would appreciate feedback.
I’m also a woman who hates it when a man calls me “baby” or anything like that. While I have major issues with terms of endearment I have never had an issue with endearment, the real thing. Just think many things are best left to the imagination
This did begin as a one time short story. I’m fascinated by the brain and have been long before baby boomers made it chic as we’re losing our parents to death and dementia. I used to talk about it when I wanted to empty a room. Now I’m the one to leave.
Still brain chips are going to happen one day and they’re not always going to be used for good. I’m trying to keep this realistic to what might happen in the next 22 years. Probably should have made it 50 years into the future, but the characters are in their 40’s and I can make Amy Winehouse jokes.
Please be kind. I know not what I’m doing. Only that this amuses me in between getting my apartment ready to sell. Please suspend your disbelief. I am and I’m horrible at that.
