Life's weird

June 15, 2005 By pia

It’s over 90 degrees in the Big Apple.

Fave sister called last night to tell me that there is a picture of me in a large magazine. Didn’t believe her until my copy came. Still not 100 percent sure. But I think it was taken at a launch party last year for a new magazine. That wasn’t the magazine the picture is in.

A few other people called to tell me this. Still…I will let you know when a few more people tell me what they think. I’m a born cynic, and my doorman Fernando wasn’t 100 per cent sure either. As Fernando gets paid to notice my comings and goings, he’s always aware of how I look. You know how the first people they talk to on any Law & Orders are doormen?

Will have to wait for Lucia who hasn’t seen the magazine yet.

Excuse me. Have to go call everybody I know and have them look at the picture.

Fave sister just called about something else. We spend half our time on the phone trying to get the conversation back to “me.” Usually I let her go on, but today I was too psyched about this. We analyzed every pixel on the picture. Might not be me.

Then we remembered. I’m adopted, and have three half siblings I have never met. Don’t know their names or even what gender they are. They’re a bit younger than me.

Omigod, it might be one of them. This is big.

Excuse me; I have to track the photographer down.

Wait. What are the chances my half sibling would have the hair cut I had last year and have the same style clothes–okay a good tee, pleated pants, a cardigan over her shoulders? It’s the hair though; nobody has my hair and had that hair cut. My hair has always been totally unique. Rafe, will have Rafe look. What’s the good of having a best friend who owns a Madison Avenue hair salon, if he can’t tell his own haircut? The hair is brown with red and blonde hairlights, very thick and wavy as the Japanese hair straightenings were growing out. I’m horrible with hair. Have to have hairstylist friends to save me from myself.

Oh I’m confused but this is exciting. Weird, totally weird.

If it’s me I take back most horrible things that I have said about my appearance in the last several years. Most but not all.

when i was a kid. she used to play tennis and there was a photo of a pretty girl playing tennis (it was time appropriate n all..) and we were all convinced it was her.

    though i remained skeptical…

cuz, like, we did not know for sure.

    hope it is you!

About Me

I live in the South, not South Florida, a few blocks from the ocean, and two blocks from the main street. It's called Main Street. Amazes me too.

I'm from New York. I mostly lived in the Mid-Upper East Side, and the heart of the Upper West Side. It amazes me when people talk about how scared they were of Times Square in the 1970's and 1980's.

As my mother said: "know the streets, look out and you'll be fine."

What was scary was the invasion of the crack dens into "good buildings in good 'hoods." And the greedy landlords who did everything they could to get good tenants out of buildings.

I'm a Long Island girl, and proud of it now.
Then I hated everything about the suburbs. Yet somehow I lived in a few great Long Island Sound towns after high school.
