This was wonderful. It is so nice to hear about someone that was as excited about books as I was at that age. It is also nice to hear about someone else that twirled their hair. Did I mention that I am mostly Irish? The other part of me is American Indian. My grandma was a Bixler, who were related to the Wentworths and the Gatemy’s? All I know is that my mom claims one of the big parks in Chicago used to belong to my relative and that there is now a Wentworth avenue. She said that they used to leave my grandma lots of money, but that she would go crazy buying cars and stuff. She said that women back in those days never got their hands on money. I say that she was manic, but that would embarrass mom to death. I love reading about your parents. Do tell us more.

Ah…I remember back then, oh so well. My aunt and uncle used to fly me up to Potsdam, NY every summer on Mohawk Airlines. DC 3’s back then, out of Newark. I have a lot of fond memories. You might have coaxed a little story out of me to be told sometime in the near future. You have a way of doing that to people, Pia.

    wow thats really lovely pia!!
I was clumsy with sports of any kind as well, as well as a terrible book worm (still am!). I was also really crap at making new friends so luckily my parents didn’t move till I was 16 and could cope with it.

You really bring people and places alive. and you *should* have made the honours class no?

I love your stories. My childhood was totally different being the oldest of 5 girls and growing up in the country. Heck I was 15 before I ever went to a fair or a movie. Your recall of detail is amazing.

About Me

I live in the South, not South Florida, a few blocks from the ocean, and two blocks from the main street. It's called Main Street. Amazes me too.

I'm from New York. I mostly lived in the Mid-Upper East Side, and the heart of the Upper West Side. It amazes me when people talk about how scared they were of Times Square in the 1970's and 1980's.

As my mother said: "know the streets, look out and you'll be fine."

What was scary was the invasion of the crack dens into "good buildings in good 'hoods." And the greedy landlords who did everything they could to get good tenants out of buildings.

I'm a Long Island girl, and proud of it now.
Then I hated everything about the suburbs. Yet somehow I lived in a few great Long Island Sound towns after high school.
