In a recent interview with Anderson Cooper Trent Lott claims that he has voted FOR every flood or levee package that has gone through Congress.
COOPER: In retrospect, was it a mistake for the federal government in the last couple years to cut the budget for the army corps of engineers in southeastern Louisiana for hurricane protection? Was it a mistake to cut some of the federal funding for flood control in that region?
LOTT: Yes, I do think that’s been a mistake. People that don’t live in flood areas of the country — and lots of the country don’t really fully understand good work the corps does and how badly we need it. Yes, I don’t think it was a wise decision. I think we should put more into flood control problems.
But, you know, you’ve got papers like the “Washington Post” editorializing against what the corps does when they build levees and they build pumps. But yes, we ought to be putting more into it, and I vote that way every year.
Curiously, I searched the Internet and cannot find anything to back up his claim. I do know he is big on flood control in his state but still cannot find anything on a Federal level about flood control that he voted for.
I did find two bills S.2975 in 2002 and S.699 in 2003 that both ended up stalled in committee and never came to a vote (side note, both bills were sponsored by Democrats). So, is his claim truth or just more GOP lies? And if these bills stalled in committee under a Republican controlled Congress that essentially means Trent Lott and the Republican party voted NO!
I was wondering about this myself.
Yeah, right, the Post editorialized against protecting New Orleans. So much so that last year they carried a long piece based on the New Orleans Times/Picayune’s series about how a severe hurricane could do just what this one did.
Maybe it was news to Chertoff that this could happen, but I read about it, and if Lott and his brethren were reading the newspapers, they’d have known about it too……
you ask, my answer – probably lies, that go with spin. Rove is going to have a shitty time of it trying to stop the negative spin around Katrina. Too big for his fancy pants.
Carl Rove? who is he? I thought that name was discreetly dropped by the republican run media.
It’s too bad that in this world of all these political men who want to wear the big pants, none of them are willing to accept accountability when it comes to shortcomings.
