Rumors to the contrary, I'm not Al Franken in drag

December 18, 2005 By pia

Rumors that I am Al Franken in drag have been greatly exagarrated. The first and only time I saw him do his old PBS lady, I realized that I could easily catch what she has; or spend the rest of my life worrying that I will turn into her.

But those women were in Another Mother for Peace during Viet Nam; and were an integral part of the anti-war movement. Once I had just gotten off a bus for a demonstration and was walking, talking and smoking a joint. So I almost didn’t notice a woman who was so close to our family I can’t call her a family friend; more like a chosen aunt.

Fortunately she talked more than I do and wasn’t even looking at me. But she was very happy when I touched her which was the only way to get Claire’s attention, and introduced her to my very charming friends. She could be loud and obnoxious at times, but she never stopped being active in the larger community. Actually she’s not a great old PBS lady because she wore too much good jewelry, and always dressed well.

The older women I see around my ‘hood dress sharply, carry PBS bags, and look good. Maybe I will turn into them; maybe I’m on the road to becoming them now.

Funny–suppose it’d be better to be Al in drag than say that big fat idiot Rush.

That’s too bad. I think Al Franken in drag would be hot.

About Me

I live in the South, not South Florida, a few blocks from the ocean, and two blocks from the main street. It's called Main Street. Amazes me too.

I'm from New York. I mostly lived in the Mid-Upper East Side, and the heart of the Upper West Side. It amazes me when people talk about how scared they were of Times Square in the 1970's and 1980's.

As my mother said: "know the streets, look out and you'll be fine."

What was scary was the invasion of the crack dens into "good buildings in good 'hoods." And the greedy landlords who did everything they could to get good tenants out of buildings.

I'm a Long Island girl, and proud of it now.
Then I hated everything about the suburbs. Yet somehow I lived in a few great Long Island Sound towns after high school.
